On staying longer than is comfortable

The best frames almost always come after the moment you think it's over.

There's a moment on every shoot where the obvious picture is done. The light is fine, the subject has relaxed, and everyone's ready to go home. I've learned that this moment is not the end. It's the doorway.

The pictures I'm proudest of all came from the twenty minutes after I thought I was finished — when the performance drops and something truer wanders into the frame.

Staying longer than is comfortable is the whole job, really. Most people leave right before the good part.
